The Barry Jenkin's “Moonlight” official theatrical poster (2016) by A24 - an entertainment company (McNary), specializing in film distribution, and film and television production; screenings, advertisements; movie posters, advertisements, et cetera - is one of my most favorite designs.
Seeing this poster for the very first time, judging by the color palettes used, the compositions, and the hindered imagery – I get vibes of being in like an alley way, or a dark, cold street, on a rainy day. A street filled with illuminating lights from cars passing by, neon lights gleaming bright from nearby stores. That is the vibe I get from seeing this poster. It resonates well with what the title is… ‘Moonlight’.
This poster design really captured my attention, as it was brought up by one of my Design Lecturers, Krishna. Seeing this poster, the cold color scheme; purple, indigo (Crayola) and teal, resonates with its movie title “Moonlight” – the night sky; ray of light from the moon; being gloomy, cold and mystical.
The poster is shown with a face composition, being divided into three parts, each being a face peace from the three characters in the movie; left to right, Alex Hibbert, Ashton Sanders and Trevante Rhodes. This gives a stunning effect, which makes it one of my most favorite posters.
The color palette is the most outstanding feature in this poster, which I find very radical and ‘cool’ (pun intended).
Also, the ‘gloomy’ effect on the main title ‘Moonlight’ as well as on the stars; indicating the ratings from variety of film critics and journalists, are quite ‘eye-catchy’. I would assume A24 added this feature to grasp onto the audience’s attention to the aspects of the film, in which would please them. The rating stars were easy to catch onto – A24 might have done this in intent to show how other ‘big’ critics rate the film.
